Special Education/Inclusion Teacher: Job Posting

‘Na Aksa Gyilak’yoo School (NAGK) is seeking an experienced Special Education/Inclusion Teacher who is eager and keen to
work in a fairly new small independent school that is evolving. NAGK is a certified and accredited by both the BC Ministry of
Education and the First Nations School Association. It is conveniently located 5km West of Terrace, B.C. on Hwy 16. Our
school is situated at the confluence of the Skeena and Kalum Rivers in the beautiful community of Kitsumkalum. NAGK
education focuses on collaboration and co-planning to effectively differentiate in a project-based, experiential learning
program. The Tsimshian language (Sm’algya̱x) is foundational throughout our instructional program and is strongly

JOB SUMMARY
The Special Education/Inclusion Teacher will oversee the special education department which includes a learning support
coordinator and Educational Assistants; responsible for developing, implementing and reviewing IEPs and SMART Goals;
responsible for developing the special education workplans, funding requests and submitting final reports; coordinating and
facilitating school-based team meetings; advocating, coordinating, scheduling and communicating with specialists (ie.
educational psychologist, SLP, OT and counselling) for students who have exceptional abilities and learning disabilities;
working closely and cooperatively with the principal and classroom teachers; incorporating Sm’algyax and Tsimshian culture
in their teaching; and communicating and working closely with parents, extended family and other external agencies.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s Degree in Special Education with BC Teacher Certification
• Knowledge of the BC Curriculum and Special Education Guidelines for BC Schools
• Experience writing, implementing and reviewing IEP’s and SMART Goals
• Knowledge of public, independent and band operated schools, an asset
• Knowledgeable of various Reading and Math Programs
• Knowledge of Sm’algyax and Tsimshian culture, an asset
• Innovative and Creative Teaching Experience
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
• Good problem solving and decision-making skills
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills, including technology
• Supervision skills and experience
• Motivational and behavioral management techniques
• First Aid & CPR and Food Safe Certificates, an asset
• Sensitivity to individual needs and the ability to meet these needs
• Ability to monitor student progress
• Good classroom management skills
• Patient, kind and sense of humour
• Team player, leadership and self-motivation skills
• High standards of work ethics and good role model
